Do I Need a Visitor Visa/Student Visa to study in Canada?

Some students will require a visitor visa/student visa to study in Canada. You should check with the nearest Canadian Embassy/Consulate to determine whether you need a visa and the type of visa you should apply for. All students who intend to study in Canada for more than six months will require a Student Visa. It could take up to six weeks to obtain this document.

After you register with ICLS, you will be sent a Letter of Acceptance immediately. You will need the Letter of Acceptance to obtain the Visitor Visa/Student Visa from the Canadian Embassy/Consulate. If you have any questions regarding visas, please contact ICLS at info@iclstoronto.com.

How do I travel in Toronto?

On the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) you can travel by bus, subway and streetcar. A single trip is $2.75. You can purchase 10 tickets for $22.50 or a monthly pass for $109.00. The monthly pass gives you unlimited use. For more information see http://transit.toronto.on.ca.

Where do I buy medical insurance?

All students are required to have medical insurance while studying in Canada. ICLS has a reputable insurance provider who will provide the necessary insurance coverage for $1.80 per day.

What clothes will I need?

Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid in Toronto. You will need light clothing but it is important to have a sweater or jacket for the evenings. Spring (March to June) and Fall (September to November) have more comfortable temperatures. A jacket is required on most days. Winter (December to February) can be very cold for short periods of time. A winter coat, hat and lined boots will keep you comfortable.

Can I use a Canadian bank while I am in Canada ?

TD Canada TrustYes. TD Canada Trust is one of the five largest banks in Canada. ICLS has an agreement with TD Bank for you to do your personal banking with them. The bank is a five minute walk from the school. Three other major banks are also located at the intersection of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue. If you require assistance, please ask the receptionist at ICLS.

How much spending money will I need?

Students have told us they require a minimum of $100 per week for activity fees and entertainment. However, every student has different needs.

How much does a meal in a restaurant cost?

There are hundreds of ethnic and Canadian restaurants in Toronto. Not including alcohol, you can expect to pay between $14 - $16 for dinner. Lunch can be purchased for between $6 - $8. The expected tip is 15 - 20%.

How will I get to my homestay or other destination when I arrive at the airport?

If you choose to have ICLS pick you up at the airport, you will be taken directly to your homestay family or the destination you specify.

Will I receive a certificate when I complete a language level?

Yes, students who register for four weeks or more will receive a certificate when they successfully complete a language level.

Will I need to purchase any books for the program?

ICLS will have copies of the textbooks that your instructor will be using to teach you. If you wish to purchase a copy of a textbook, it will cost $20 - $30.

Will ICLS organize after-school and weekend activities?

Each month a list of activities will be posted. Many of the activities will not be expensive. The activities will provide opportunities for you to experience the many interesting attractions and cultural sites that make Toronto special. Of course, a week-end trip to Niagara Falls, Quebec (French Canada) or canoeing in Algonquin Park will be more expensive.

Are there computers available for the students to use?

Yes, there is a computer room where you will have free access to computers to keep in contact with your family and friends and to search the internet.

Does ICLS have a student lounge?

Yes, there is a student lounge with large windows that gives you a great view of downtown Toronto. Comfortable sofas, a refrigerator and snack machines will give you a relaxing place to eat your lunch and chat with your friends and classmates.
